Story of a Second Chance
After five years on dialysis, Leroy Hollis finally received a kidney transplant in January, 2011. With the new kidney came a new way of life no longer bound by the physical and mental confines of a dialysis machine.
But the transplant brought expenses Leroy and his family hadn't experienced before. Not only the cost of the surgery, but the cost of the medication necessary to maintain his transplant began to add up. Even with insurance, he and his wife simply couldn't afford the medication while also supporting their family life.
Leroy turned to his social worker at Henry Ford Hospital, who applied on his behalf to Second Chance at Life.
"Receiving a grant from Second Chance at Life was a relief, " said Leroy. "I was concerned about deciding what my family could go without, just so I could get my medication. I'm not sure what I would've done had I not received their assistance."
Leroy is doing all he can to take care of his kidney. With our help, he's able to maintain a healthy transplant without sacrificing his family's needs.
Second Chance at Life (SCAL) provides financial support to transplant patients and donor families who can't otherwise afford the costs associated with a transplant. We also work to increase awareness of the benefits of organ donation and support research to improve treatment and care for transplant patients.
The majority of our fundraising is done through events; allowing you and your family the opportunity to do something that interests you while helping patients in need. Another way you can get involved is with a direct donation. Please consider supporting SCAL through a tax-deductible gift of any amount.
Did you know that you can now not only show others that you have a big heart, but that you can also help support transplant patients in need of a heart and other vital organs through Second Chance at Life (SCAL) too? Many transplant patients endure quite a financial burden both before and after receiving a transplanted organ. You can help ease some of that burden by donating various gift cards from a gas station, from Walgreen's or CVS, from Meijer's, a Visa gift card, or any other accepted gift card to SCAL. Your donated gift cards can be mailed to:
